Berlin and Londontown

Click to enlarge.I knew it was going to be a good visit when Dmytri gave me a gift when we arrived. It was a patch with the No Media Kings logo that he’d bought off some local punk girls at a flea market in Berlin.

It’s always a kick to see people steal my logo, but this really floored me.

And the show in Berlin was indeed really fun…

Hipster Hellspawn Tour

Detail from Meno's Hairstyles of the Damned. This month’s Roadshow (Sept. 1-8) aims to make the literary world a little more evil. Featuring Punk Planeteer Joe Meno from Chicago, scribbling southern dandy Todd Dills from Rock Hill, evil scientist Susan Bustos from Toronto and, for the first time ever, Roadshow ringleader Jim Munroe! Contrary to popular belief, Munroe doesn’t go on every Roadshow. He’s organized fifteen Roadshows from his home in Toronto since April 2003, but this will be the first he’s been on himself.

Munroe will also be screening his video travelogue on being a Canadian tourist in the world of Grand Theft Auto III, My Trip to Liberty City.

UPDATE: The CBC interviewed Jim on national radio from Pittsburgh, PA, and the host asked some really good questions. (Though as far as it being “always a packed house”… uh, no.) Continue reading to check out pics of the Toronto launch and our Pay Phone Tour Diaries…

Superhero Team-Up

Click to see Shary Boyle's cover illustration. For our final west coast run this season we’ve got a special edition of the Roadshow — a focus on the anthology Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Slayers, Mutants and Freaks. Emily Pohl-Weary edited this collection of comics, essays and stories about women who kick ass in pop culture. With her on the west coast is contributor Sonja Ahlers (Temper, Temper) and author Tamara Faith Berger (Lie With Me, The Way of the Whore). To see the cover image by Shary Boyle click the thumbnail to the left.

Between the acts movie-style trailers for Flyboy Action Figure Comes With Gasmask will play. Created by indie filmmakers in Toronto and Vancouver, they mark the re-release of Roadshow organizer Jim Munroe’s first novel. For more info on this No Media Kings 5th anniversary edition, see here.

The Fall Season Begins!

The fall season of the Perpetual Motion Roadshow began last night just down the street from my place in Toronto. The shows are the payoff for me. Seeing firsthand how much the audience were into Les, Jessica, and Wred’s stuff — diverse as it is — was really satisfying. They’ll be touring the northwest all this week, so check out their schedule or listen to their Payphone Tour Diaries on the Roadshow page.

OCT. 1 UPDATE: T’was a success! My favourite Pay Phone Tour Diary was this one — came complete with mood setting music… Cincinnati’s CityBeat, Montreal’s McGill Daily, and the New York Post wrote nice pieces about them, and Wred’s posted some pictures here. Jessica’s put up a photopage and more media links here.

About
The Perpetual Motion Roadshow is an indie press touring circuit, a combination of a vaudevillian variety show and a punk rock tour. There's one loop in the Northeast that goes May-Oct, and and one run of the west coast between Vancouver and LA during Nov-Apr. Each month, three new lively indie performers pile in a car and do seven cities in eight days, doing shows with the bold guarantee: No Boring Readings or Your Money Back!
If you've just missed one, you can subscribe for the monthly email update with the next Roadshow's details.
