I’ll Be Your Server March 14, 2004

Click for the bigger picture.Contrary to public opinion, the nomediakings.org server is not in a climate-controlled location hidden somewhere in the Colorado Mountains. The machine is actually a couple feet away from me as I type this in my bedroom. (Click the pic to see it in context.)

I’ve been running my own server for the last year and a half. Since then, I’ve slowly been taking on other people on a word-of-mouth basis to the point where I’m hosting a dozen or so websites beyond my own. It’s a pretty big responsibility, and I didn’t want to take on more than I could handle.

But so far people have seemed to appreciate the reasonable prices and responsive service, and it hasn’t eaten into my time too much, so I’m throwing it open to the world at large.

Price
-$80 a year ($60 US) for webhosting isn’t the cheapest deal you can get, but you might like that the money goes into my No Media Kings projects.
-There aren’t any official space or bandwidth limits at the moment, but the price is for a single account (although you can have unlimited redirects: ie., yourfriend@yourdomain.com can be bounced to another email address.)
-I ask for the cash up front, because I hate collecting money owed, but if at any point you want out (for any reason) I’ll refund the percentage of the year you haven’t used.

Service
-I’m happy to field questions about server-side issues, but I cannot offer any website/html help at all.
-If you’d like to implement a new script or feature that isn’t already on the server I need about a week — it takes a while to research the security risks or compatibility problems it might pose. Please ask beforehand if you know of any special requirements, and take a moment to read up on the tools currently installed below by following the links.

Features
-FTP, SSH, POP3, webmail (SquirrelMail with SpamAssassin and ClamAV antivirus)
-Mailing list manager (DadaMail)
-detailed web stats (AWStats)
-PHP 4.3.4, Perl 5.8.5, MySql, CGI

Hardware
-700mHz Linux box running Mandrake 10
-256megs of RAM
-700k upload/3meg download DSL connection

Uptime
-If you need 99.9% uptime, you should probably go elsewhere. I really have no idea what percentage of the time the server has been down — but since my own projects are hosted on it, you can be damn sure I do everything in my power to keep it online all the time.
-Because it’s physically in my apartment, I can do reboots and see to hardware concerns first hand.

Drop me a line if you have further questions. And if you’ve read this page carefully and you want me to hook you up — I can take cheques to No Media Kings at 10 Trellanock Ave. Toronto ON, M1C 5B5 CANADA or credit card via PayPal, click the button below.

If you’d also like me to register a domain name, it’s an extra $20. Please get in touch first.

Those who’re interested in doing it themselves, check out Chantel’s great DIY Server article. Although this differs widely, it personally took me three months and $400 in new computer equipment to go from having no server to having a server that was up and running.
