How do you decide
the price of your books?
I priced
my books to cover my costs.
What goes into
choosing a cover? Back cover blurb?
I love silk screens, so that's what I did with the cover. I asked
my friend Golda to come up with a line for the back, her writing
is very visual and dreamlike, I thought it was appropriate.
What's your editing/refining
process?
Since I was doing this for myself, I left it open, did minor editing,
left it up to the artist. Lorenz, Fiona and I would meet on a weekly
basis to discuss content and cover design, it was a lot of fun.
At times there were technical problems, some of the thumbnails for
the cover were too detailed and would get lost in the silkscreen
process and had to be re-drawn. One of the artist had edited himself,
by submitting his more subdued work. It was a little awkward asking
him for his more prolific drawings. Getting the book print ready
was a bit of an ordeal, I learned a lot from it.
What was your
print run and how much did it cost? How did you raise the money
to publish?
The print run was approximately 485. The cost was between $3500
to 4500. Money? by working hard at my job.
What have you
done to promote it?
We sent press packages to many newspapers and magazines. Word of
mouth is always good. Marginal Distribution has it in their catalogue.
How can people
get your book now?
The Beguiling (Peter Birkemoe, being such a great supporter, purchased
50 to 100 books, I can't remember how many, I love that store),
Pages, events like Canzine.
What will you
do differently next time, if anything?
Nothing.
